Third Project of an English Elementary School in Bochum

Feb 2009
09

For a while I heard about the project of setting up an elementary school that starts with English in first grade or teaches only in English language by the ‘Bochumer Bildungszentrum e.V.‘. (BBZ) I had heard about the project months ago but I didn’t realize how far the progress was. In the meantime, other projects had proceeded: the bilingual Carolinen-Schule and a branch of the International School in Heiligenhaus. In the last meeting of the committee on migration and integration of the city of Bochum the ‘Bochumer Bildungszentrum e.V.” told that it reveived a license from the district goverment in Arnsberg to run such a school. This means that three different schools with different concepts which all focus English language have now a license to run such a school in Bochum.

I am curious to hear about the concept of the BBZ and to learn what the difference to their concept is. I also get worried if three new elementary schools is not too much, even if the focus not only on pupils and parents living in Bochum. I have to add that there was sort of an irritation during the discussion. A representative of the migrants on the board who is connected to the IFAK sort of attacked the people form BBZ. It seems to me that the migrants of the second generation who support the BBZ are mainly of Turkish ancestry. The irritation was all about whether and how far the BBZ is connected to the ideas of Fethullah Gülen (wiki), a Turkish philosopher. I cannot judged if this is the case and if this would be a matter of concern. The whole irritation could also be a conflict between groups of migrants or rival migrant organization. In the end, work with migrants is connect with topics of financial aid by state and city and therefore jobs for members or staff of migrant organizations.

I am looking forward to a meeting with the BBZ on Wednesday.
