Via the website of the British German Club in Duisburg, I found a hint to an English theater group at the university of Duisburg. The university is now the university of Duisburg and Essen after they joined. The group is already nearly 30 years old and consists of students and aluminis. It calls itstelf the “Duisburg University Englsih Thespians”
Surfing the internet and looking for a page with the word ‘British’, I ran into the page of the British-German Club Duisburg, an officially registered club. Here’s how they describe themselves:
We call our association the British-German Club Duisburg (officially listed as: Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft Duisburg). In fact, we are open to anyone, regardless of nationality.
What ever your roots may be, we look forward to welcoming you to one of our meetings or events. So pop by, or join us regularly, for instance, for the opportunity to converse in English and take part in a variety of activities, ranging from talks on current affairs to contemporary and traditional cultural events and get-togethers. We are, of course, glad to embrace nationals from other English-speaking countries worldwide. People from all walks of life who either come to our city on a brief stay or to live here on a permanent base, attend the meetings of the British-German Club Duisburg. Why not come and have a look for yourself in order to both enjoy and add to the scope of activities our club has to offer.
They seem to have a monthly meeting. Looks like it is each month on the first Thursday at the pub Hundertmeister in Duisburg-Dellplatz. They list their planned acitivties on their webpages. There is more than just round tables.
Due to Thursday’s list with the stops of the mobile food store, I realized that there is another International School in Duisburg. I had thought this one is in Düsseldorf being a branch of Cologne what would be funny because of the traditional conflict between the two cities. No, they are different schools.
In Duisburg exists the The English Internationl School St. George’s which is an sister to the school in Cologne and Aachen. The school seems to be an additional school. Therefore it doesn’t receive state funding. I’m no longer in the mood to describe the pedagogical concept. Have a look at their page. They seem to use the IBO curriculum.
My wife and I heard about it form another American women in Bochum: There is a mobile market (a lorry) that comes to Bochum frequently which offers food and some other stuff from the USA and the UK. Talking about it again, I was told about an website of that guy. It’s www.foodfromhome.de.
I had a short look at the page and here is my summarize: You can get all the stuff via mail order or from the mobile store which travels through North Rhine-Westphalia and parts of Holland (the Netherlands). The website contains a list with place where the mobile store with about 250 different items (out of more thatn 1,500 available) stops.
In Ruhr there are stops in Bochum (2nd Saturday in month, 13.15 – 13.45h at Starlight Express), Bottrop (2nd Saturday in month, 17.00 – 17.30h at carpark Osterfelder Straße/Hans-Böckler-Straße), Dortmund (2nd Saturday in month Rheinische Straße / Langestraße, 14.20 – 14.40h) and Duisburg (International School St. Georges School), 2nd Tuesday, 1st and 3rd Friday in month, 15.00 – 16.00, Birkenstraße 15, Tuesday at Kranichstraße 21), Essen (2nd Tuesday, 18.00 – 18.30h, ica halle Am Westbahnhof and 2nd Saturday in month, carpark at Barbarossa Platz), Gelsenkirchen (2nd Saturday, 12.30 – 12.50h, Ringstraße 75-80), Hamm (3rd (!)
